Accidental Death of an Anarchist

by Dario Fo

Thursday, 07 February 2008 - Saturday, 09 February 2008

This is a comic play by Dario Fo which caused great excitement and outrage when it was first performed in the 70's in Italy partly due to the fact that it is based on a true event.

This political farce is centered around the death of a railway worker who, wrongly accused of being an anarchist is thrown from a window at Police Headquarters. Unfortunately for the police officers responsible, this has generated unwanted media attention and they are desperate to cover it up. Enter the character of 'maniac', a lunatic posing as a high court judge who fools them into confiding in him. He cleverly manipulates them into confessing to their brutality and makes them look ridiculous and farcical - just in time for the journalist's arrival.

The piece is cleverly written so that the actors can come out of character, talk to the audience and have a an element of freedom. It is very much an ensemble piece.
